Issue Position: Protect Civil Liberties

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

We don't hear as much on civil liberties at the state level as we do at the federal level. It is, nevertheless, important to take notice when our rights are infringed. No government will remove your freedoms all at once. A process, known as incrementalism, transforms government in small steps that are not recognizable to the majority of us. Unless we're watching the legislature convene daily and read each bill that comes out of each session it is hard to identify the violations. Most of us are busy or frustrated with the process of keeping up with our state government's actions. I will work to inform you of any legislation that violates our liberties and will act to stop their passage. One example of state legislation that is a clear violation of our first amendment rights is the Arizona House Bill 2549. I will oppose any legislation, like this bill, that would censor freedom of speech on the internet in Minnesota.
